Snoring happens when airflow vibrates relaxed tissues in your throat. Obstructive sleep apnea is more serious: the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, briefly stopping your breathing — sometimes dozens of times an hour — without you realizing it.
Loud, habitual snoring; gasping or pauses in breathing during sleep; waking unrefreshed or with headaches; and daytime fatigue or trouble focusing. Untreated sleep apnea is linked to high blood pressure, heart problems and more, so it’s worth taking seriously.
A physician diagnoses sleep apnea, usually with a sleep study — but for many people with snoring or mild-to-moderate apnea, a custom oral appliance is an effective, comfortable alternative to CPAP: no mask, no hose, just a small device worn at night. Learn more at the Deccan Sleep Center.
