Do Root Canals Hurt? What to Really Expect

By Deccan Dental · July 30, 2026 · 3 min read

Why the bad reputation is outdated

The pain people associate with root canals usually comes from the infected or inflamed tooth beforehand. The procedure itself removes that infection, which is what ends the pain.

What actually happens

The area is fully numbed, the damaged pulp inside the tooth is removed, the space is cleaned and sealed, and the tooth is usually protected afterward with a crown. Most patients say it feels similar to getting a filling.

Afterward

Mild soreness for a few days is normal and easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief. If you have a toothache now, don’t wait — book a visit so we can help.
